"Why did you become a dentist?"
This is the single most asked question put
to every dentist. In my case I went on a school trip to Guy's
Hospital Dental School in 1956 which stimulated my interest. I
liked people, I wanted to help them and I wanted to be self
employed working with my hands. |
| *1958 was offered a place to study dentistry
at Guy's Hospital Dental School on the basis of my rugby playing
ability. Times have changed! |
| *1959 -1963 Studied and completed the course
to qualify. |
| *1964 Started in practice as an associate at
36 High Street, Southend-on-Sea.
(Where
BHS now stands) |
| *1968 Moved surgery premises to 38 Chalkwell
Avenue to allow the redevelopment of British Home Stores. |
| *Became a partner in the practice and stayed
at these premises until 1988. |
| * 1974 Was elected Chairman of the Southend
Branch of the British Dental Association. |
| *1987 Following a Rotary visit to Alberta,
Canada decided to upgrade my premises to a purpose built dental
surgery. |
| *1989 Moved in to the purpose built surgery
in Aviation Way with accommodation for 6 dentists and every
modern facility. This was one of the first purpose built
surgeries in the country |
* 1997 I retired from dentistry having treated thousands of
people from Southend over a period of 35 years. Dentistry was
physically hard and demanding but I got great satisfaction from
doing my best for all the people under my care. When I retired I
had a stress related neck injury which made it advisable to retire
early and become a full time local politician. I was then able
to be a pain in the neck as well as have one. |
